Oberleutnant Demmel was in command for 2 heavy companies and 2 infantry platoons of Grenadier-Regiment 113. On 27 March 1945 Kampfgruppe Demmel (ca. 1.300 soldiers) was on railroad transport with destination Lohr as reinforcements for the 7. Armee. Due to the lack of a locomotive, the transport stood at Waigolshausen near Schweinfurt. Major Eggemann at Würzburg ordered to unload the unit and the transport to Hammelburg by trucks. Kampfgruppe Demmel was attached to Panzerjägerabteilung 251 as infantry cover. Due to delays, Kampfgruppe Demmel arrived at the Hundsfeld area about 20:00 h.
