Gemünden 25 March 2005

On 25 and 26 March 2005 we organized a anniversary celebration in Gemünden. It was the 60th anniversary of the fatal bombing raid on the town and the attack of Task Force Baum. We arranged a exhibition together with the Film-Photo-Ton Verein e. V. in their new residence in the Huttenschloß. We displayed historical material and showed the movie about the occupation of Gemünden by the 14th US-Armored Division.

On the evening of 25 March 2005 we visited the the cemetery Einmal at the Zollberg. Dr. Jim Sudmeier insisted to lay down a bouquet of flowers on the grave of a German soldiers, who was killed during the attack of Task Force Baum at the Railroad triangle on the Morning of 27 March 1945.

This two young German soldiers were not even 18 years old when they got killed in Gemünden. They were German Navy personnel, on a transport from Greece to Northern Germany. Their train had to wait in the Railroad triangle. They had been at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Peter Domes shows Dr. Jim Sudmeier the wall in the little chapel of the cemetery which list the names of all killed persons, buried there.

After our little ceremony, we showed Dr. Jim Sudmeier the market place and explained the total destruction of the area during the attack of the 14th US-Armored Divison on 4 and 5 April 1945. The small sand stone model behind us is a model of the former mayor house. (Left to right: Gudrun Schneider, Martin Heinlein, Dr. Jim Sudmeier, Ulrike Domes)

After our little walk through the town, we went back to the Huttenschloß to have dinner with some members of Film-Photo-Ton Museumsverein e. V.
